I have finally gotten my new brooks saddle adjusted where it's comfortable and the handlebars set the way I like them so now I will definitely swap out the platforms for something like a set of Shimano PDM-545. I think I will go with a new pair of shoes, some that are comfortable for walking besides being clipless.
Some people like 'Half-Clips' which are toe-clips without the 'prong section that holds a toe-strap. There's just the front 'basket' part of the toe-clip and it's purpose is to stop the foot from slipping off the pedal. It also lets you position the foot in the same spot each time you put your foot on the pedal.

Some pedals have very flat platforms that give lots of suppor even if you pedal barefoot or wear sneakers.
