This is why I have read that clipless are safer. You can adjust the tension for release and all you have to do is twist your foot to release.

Switching to clipless on pavement was easy. But it took me a while longer to switch to clipless on my mountain bike, especially on single track & technical terrain. After trying several different clipless systems on my bikes I eventually settled on eggbeaters for all my bikes.....road, touring, fixed gear, mtb.... ever since they became available, almost 20 years ago.

I use clips/straps on my Fuji Newest 3.0. I don't like being attached to my bike permanently and didn't like clipless when I tried them. I've used them on all of my tours. Most recently on my ~5,200 mile tour this summer.

Mine are adjustable. Not sure if they all are though? Not too familiar with them since i've had the same pair the entirety of my bike riding life.

Whatever is comfortable for you is your best bet I would say!

Way back in the day, I rode from Sweden to Spain barefoot on plastic pedals (5 speed bike). Worked fine even over the Pyrenees
Nowadays I ride with toe-clips, straps and running shoes... The time's they are a changin'
If it wasn't for needing a second pair of shoes I'd probably go clipless... but TWO pairs of shoes! Too much for this old hippy!

Bikes: 1989 Trek 950 MTB, 1991 Schwinn Crosscut, 2015 Trek 520,

I see a pretty even split between Clipless and Clips and straps. In the 8 days since I started this thread I have ridden my 520 quite a few times with just the platforms and no straps, I couldn't count the number of times my feet have slipped of the pedals. I have finally gotten my new brooks saddle adjusted where it's comfortable and the handlebars set the way I like them so now I will definitely swap out the platforms for something like a set of Shimano PDM-545. I think I will go with a new pair of shoes, some that are comfortable for walking besides being clipless.

Some people like 'Half-Clips' which are toe-clips without the 'prong section that holds a toe-strap. There's just the front 'basket' part of the toe-clip and it's purpose is to stop the foot from slipping off the pedal. It also lets you position the foot in the same spot each time you put your foot on the pedal.

VeloSolo - MKS Half Toe Clips

Some pedals have very flat platforms that give lots of suppor even if you pedal barefoot or wear sneakers.

Cheers

I noted the use of Power grip straps on MKS Lamda pedals

as I cartoned up a transcontinental cyclist's Bike to ship it back east

I have used those in the past also and seem to remember having sore toes from my toes rubbing on the clips but at least you don't get tangled up in the straps
