Indeed. There are a few 'Shimergo' setups that work. I have used 8sp Ergos/RD on a Shimano 7-speed cluster. Same cog spacing. It's a very versatile setup, as 7sp freewheels are a dime a dozen.
It just clicked that I've got a few Sachs 7sp freewheels that would thread right on this bike with a bit of respacing/redishing. That may be the ticket.
