Follow up. So I installed the Dog Ears deal yesterday. I'm not super fired up about it.

I would recommend waiting on doing it until you have almost nothing left on the stock plastic base plate.

I say this because my Dog Ear base is just as loose in my mounts as my 40% broken stock base was. In fact, the Dog Ear base in looser in my SRAM mount than my broken stock base was. I had to switch to a K-Edge mount on my bike to get a functional seal between the base and mount. And it still rattles in the mount on rough roads.

I don't trust the locking of the Dog Ear mount either. I've taken to putting a light on my handlebars next to the Edge 1000 so that it cannot turn and fall out. I'm concerned on a rough road that the Dog Ear mount could shake free from the K-Edge.

Another thing is the Dog Ear mount reduces the volume from the Edge. This may not seem like much of an issue, but I also use the Garmin Varia radar with my Edge 1000 and I rely on loud, audible beeps to tell me when cars are approaching from behind. With the Dog Ears mount installed, the volume has reduced to the point that I might not be able to hear the car alerts in strong headwinds anymore. Time will tell.

My point is, wait until the last possible moment to install your Dog Ears as it is not better than the partially broken mount. And once you file off the remaining material from the stock base as the installation instructions call for, you are stuck with it.
