Broken Garmin Edge 1000 mount

Broken Garmin Edge 1000 mount
I'm not sure the actual term, but after a couple of years and 10,000+ miles of riding, the quarter turn circle on the back of my unit has started breaking away. To the point that it is loose in all of my mounts now.
I called Garmin and they said there was a two week, $130 replacement process I could go through with them or to look into some of the options on the Internet.
I thought I'd check here to see if anyone knows of any good fixes for this issue?

There are some 3D printed versions. Not possible that they would cost $130 even if you went to Shapeways to get one. Should be < 2 weeks too.

It's the back of the Edge unit and not of the mount that's broken, right? So Garmin quoted you to replace the entire GPS computer, not to replace the mount. (Hell you could buy a new out front mount for $30.)
How many bikes do you use it with, and how often do you move it?

Dog Ears GPS sells a "billet aluminum mounting plate to replace your broken Garmin mounting tabs." $19.99 per plate.
It's worked well for us to revive an Edge 500 whose right tab broke after a couple of years of frequent on-and-off use. I used both epoxy and the included screws to attach it.

k-Edge (K-EDGE - GoPro Mounts, Garmin Mounts, Chain Catchers) has some really nice mounts. I use this brand instead of the Garmin on my biked (520, not 1000). They are also available on Amazon.

Even though I have designed and sell a mount replacement on Shapeways, my recommendation is the one from Dog Ears, it is aluminum and very strong.
If it is the mount, just get one of the K-Edge XL combo mounts, they fit the 1000.

Yes, I mean the back of the unit itself.
I move it between multiple bikes and one has a K-Edge on it which I've read causes the damage I'm trying to fix.
That dog ear deal looks good. I'll look into it.

I have one on my tandem, but it gets used very infrequently. All my others are the new plastic 1/4 receiver.
The dog ear part looks really good. That seems like a replacement part that is better than the original.

Follow up. So I installed the Dog Ears deal yesterday. I'm not super fired up about it.
I would recommend waiting on doing it until you have almost nothing left on the stock plastic base plate.
I say this because my Dog Ear base is just as loose in my mounts as my 40% broken stock base was. In fact, the Dog Ear base in looser in my SRAM mount than my broken stock base was. I had to switch to a K-Edge mount on my bike to get a functional seal between the base and mount. And it still rattles in the mount on rough roads.
I don't trust the locking of the Dog Ear mount either. I've taken to putting a light on my handlebars next to the Edge 1000 so that it cannot turn and fall out. I'm concerned on a rough road that the Dog Ear mount could shake free from the K-Edge.
Another thing is the Dog Ear mount reduces the volume from the Edge. This may not seem like much of an issue, but I also use the Garmin Varia radar with my Edge 1000 and I rely on loud, audible beeps to tell me when cars are approaching from behind. With the Dog Ears mount installed, the volume has reduced to the point that I might not be able to hear the car alerts in strong headwinds anymore. Time will tell.
My point is, wait until the last possible moment to install your Dog Ears as it is not better than the partially broken mount. And once you file off the remaining material from the stock base as the installation instructions call for, you are stuck with it.

so I bought a Garmin Edge 500 from a gear swap for $5 because the mount was broken like yours. I just found an old crappy rear light with a seat tube mount and epoxy'd it to the back of my Garmin. now I can use any seat tube mount on my handlebars and find any other seat tube mounts for my multiple bikes.
elegant? hell no, but works for me!
