I've found on Android that Strava chews up batteries at 2x or 3x the normal standby rate with the screen off. If I force the screen to stay active (No Screen Off app), then batteries chew up even faster.

Ahh...
Here is a description of Apple's problem.
Apple says iPhone 6S battery issue bigger than first thought

And a link to Apple's page.

It sounds like you may be hitting the "Unexpected Shutdown" that they are reporting.

Apple's iPhone 6s Battery Bug Extends Further Than First Thought

You symptoms happen to exactly match a recently discovered issue with the iPhone 6s. That makes it significantly more likely to be a phone issue rather than a Strava software issue.
OK, I checked and my serial number IS part of the battery recall. I will have that replaced and see if it solves the problem. Still seems funny that it was NOT an issue a few months ago and ONLY happens with Strava running, but my knowledge base in these matters is weak.

Thanks for the tips, I will try to remember to bump thread with update on whether battery swap solves the problem.
