another thing to look at... are you using the same QR skewer? i've run into trouble with the QR nut not clearing the Derailleur before... unscrew the skewer and remove it... THEN try to put the axle into the dropouts... and yes, i'd suspect the hub width too... are you "upgrading" to extra rear gears, or putting an MTB hub into a road frame, by chance?
