That is indeed how they work.
I currently have two sets of these out in the barn (both sold as SB-R273s, but that's another tale) awaiting a project. Seem to be nicely made, and click with authority.
I do have a set of the Tourney on the Miele. I've run them for a few years now and they work just fine. The thumb lever isn't an issue with the style of riding I do.
