When I do it on a bike, it's for safety, not convenience. There's one intersection that I sometimes travel where I can cut through a large parking lot where traffic is sparse and very slow, and avoid a crazy intersection with 5 multilane roads coming together with a very odd traffic light and things are always a little weird and a little unpredictable.

Usually I just stay on the road.
