One of my objections to much of the city's infrastructure is that it seems to consider bicycles to be pedestrians on wheels, rather than a part of vehicular traffic.

I wouldn't care, and would be happy if the rule was use them if you like, don't if you don't. But NYC sometimes enforces a "must use" rule, so every time they put in a poorly designed bike lane, the selection of usable avenues is reduced.

Note that I am not diametrically opposed to bike lanes, I just don't want them to be a handicap, that seems more designed to get us out of the way rather than to make bicycling faster and more expedient.
