We ride Conti 4000 also. For the first time ever my wife probably wore one out. We usually get massive gashes in them that can't be repaired.
To me the tire "looks" fine, but the wear indicators are gone. It's on the rear, is the tire safe to ride?
If the wear indicators are truly gone, you can still ride it but I would replace it fairly soon. You may have a few hundred miles before you see cords/casing showing through the tread, but at this point you are running higher risk of flats.
