Worn rear tire... replace both

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Worn rear tire... replace both

I finally had a tire that wore past the "wear indicator" on the GP 4000SII. So I went ahead and replaced the rear tire.

Should i replace the front also or wait for it to wear out?

Best answer is put new one on front and move front to back.

Putting new on front and back is wasting your money.

^^^ What they said. Rotating front to back when you need one new tire always keeps a very new tire on the front for good steering and handling. This plan is also the cheapest way to ride new tires without wasting any rubber. And your front never gets old, perhaps cracking from sunlight and/or ozone.

We ride Conti 4000 also. For the first time ever my wife probably wore one out. We usually get massive gashes in them that can't be repaired.

To me the tire "looks" fine, but the wear indicators are gone. It's on the rear, is the tire safe to ride?

If they look fine, maybe you can continue using them, but carry an extra CO2 cartridge and new tyre, just in case...? (Depends if you like risk or not, nothing really bad can happen from a rear wheel flat, it's not like it's gonna explose because you used it too much. If you don't see any thread you're probably OK.)

If the wear indicators are truly gone, you can still ride it but I would replace it fairly soon. You may have a few hundred miles before you see cords/casing showing through the tread, but at this point you are running higher risk of flats.

Decided to replace both. I kept the used front and saved in the event I cut one and have to order new tires.

They're cheap enough when you buy them online.

$74 for a pair... shipped.

??? You could have replaced just the rear as we recommended and kept that old one as an emergency spare. DSFDF

Could of.... but both have 3500+ miles and both have some cuts.

Since I ride mostly by myself, it's cheaper to replace both than a taxi ride home.

Why ask if you already knew the answer?

Agree with decision to replace both. New rubber all around is confidence-inspiring and looks better as well.

I think that's the route I would take.
...use the old one on the trainer in the winter or just keep it as a spare.
But being relatively inexperienced, I'm sure nobody really cares what I would do.

I didn't when I originally posted.

I replaced the rear first and then asked. When told I should put the front on the rear and the new on the front, i decided to just replace the front.

Not that moving tires around is difficult, but since I had another new tire anyway, i decided to just replace both.

If it were the front tire that needed replacement and the rear was good, i'd only replace the front.

Oh. I would've done the same.

I used to get 5,000 miles out of my GP4000S, now only about 3,500-4,000. I think the roads here are worse and maybe the tires aren't as good as before?

Weight plays an important role in wear.
