You can just put a piece of electrical tape on it before you move it up, down, or take it out to mark exactly where it was before. Thats what I've done. I think taking a square to it is an added step.
That is what I have always done, even when my post has markings ion it.

When I have light cleaning etc. work to do, I use a regular stand hanging by the seatpost. For more intense or lengthy work I use a Park stand with a TA adapter:
