You can just put a piece of electrical tape on it before you move it up, down, or take it out to mark exactly where it was before. Thats what I've done. I think taking a square to it is an added step.

That is what I have always done, even when my post has markings ion it.

For OP

When I have light cleaning etc. work to do, I use a regular stand hanging by the seatpost. For more intense or lengthy work I use a Park stand with a TA adapter:

I use a pencil mark, or make a dot with the tip of a sharpie. I suppose that frog tape or electrical tape would be pretty good too.

Yup 4 & 27 , you remove 1 wheel, then the BB is supported, you can access both sides..

To clean the bikes , the wheels are typically removed.

yeah I was curious this.. What if the wheels are a mess? Do you leave them on or clean separately off the bike? I have disc brakes and want to avoid getting stuff on them. Using Muc off, so not sure that would harm anything or affect performance if I did. Just don't want to chance it.

I use this adapter on my Domane 6 (which has the seat mast). Probably not necessary, but it's pretty cheap insurance against spacing out and over clamping.

Bontrager adapter on Domane

Greetings Wheever

I have a Domane and looked at the Bontrager adapter that you use. The one linked sates it is for a Madone. I just want to ask you if that is the one you use on your Domane. Thanks in advance
