Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

What do you mean by "auto gears"? If you are asking about an IGH (internal gear hub) then either chain or belt is suitable. As ammarolli noted, a belt is cleaner and more weather proof. However, it is more expensive and requires a specifically made frame to install while a chain can be used on any frame.

Breaking a chain should not be a concern unless it's improperly installed and/or badly neglected in service.
