Thumbies was actually my initial plan. Deore Thumb shifters, Indexed rear with friction front and a deore XT rear derailleur. I have all these parts but have kinda fallen in love with the smoothness and look of the original friction shifting system. At this point I am still up in the air on the stem option or thumb option.
