In fact, I rode mine to work today. Deliberately, not because I had to. I got it in 2008 I think, 18-20K miles on it plus or minus.
Almost 10 years old and getting on 20,000 miles on it to me is nowhere near a BSO. There are people that have broken the front suspension on cheap dual suspension bikes on the first ride. There are people that have invested 1000's of $£ in bikes and not used them anywhere near 20,000 miles. I bought a cheap bike for £65 many years ago and probably got about 4,000 miles out of it before I semi-retired it and used another bike. In that time I probably put another £100 in it with a few upgrades. 4,000 miles for £165 is good value to me and the bike still has many miles left in it.
