Bikes: Surly CrossCheck, Krampus

That is a wonderful video! It makes explicit a lot of concepts I knew but would not have been able to articulate as well as that -- and taught me some new things as well. I can't wait to have grandchildren so I can share this video with my kids!

Only thing I'd add, to make a balance bike', just take a regular bike, take off the pedals (and cranks?) and drop the seat

The trick about spending money on high-quality kids bikes is, buy them used off craigslist. Not only will you pay less than at the store, but after your kid has outgrown the bike in a year or two, their tiny weight will have caused virtually zero wear&tear, and you can resell the bike for exactly what you paid

Agreed, but some kids are extremely hard on bikes, surprisingly so. Not all, but some.

Why are we talking about this in the BSO long term test thread?

good question, it's a very non-BSO stance

I bought my daughter (older than the 3-year-old videos above) a princess BSO (from FB MP) and she hates all bikes now because "they're hard to ride" and won't even get on a bike again.

I think I need to find a larger ISLABIKES CNOC for her to ever get on one again.

Don't make the BSO mistake that I did with her.

but it's a top track in Wien (Vienna) Austria at the moment with that video.

You've posted pictures of newer bikes. And you're also commuting on the old one?

Have you drawn any new conclusions (is that an oxymoron?) about cheap bikes? Do they save much money?

Maybe we should analyze what the most cost-effective kind of bike is. It might be the cheapest bike you can get, but it might also be a step or two above that.

Also, did you get your daughter a nice bike?
