Here's an update on my experience in case anyone is interested.

I bought 3 pairs of new gloves - one home depot $10 special, Pearl Izumi Thermal Lite, and Pearl Izumi Ride Pro Softshell Lite.

The HD gloves are ok. Not quite as flexible as I'd like, and I miss the silicone bits on cycling-specific gloves that help with grip.

Both pairs of PI gloves are great. The Thermal Lite is really pretty light. Best for temps above 55* so far. They also work well as a liner under the Ride Pros and an old pair of lobster gloves I have (also Pearl Izumi, but really only good below freezing for me). The Ride Pros are perfect for the in between weather above freezing and below about 55*. All in all, seems like I have found what I need!

Thanks again, all, for sharing your experiences.
