Gloves - light and windproof

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized XC Lite.

I wear them daily in warm weather.

Ah, I see the extra layer opposite the thumb on the palm:

I wipe snot with the left and forehead and face with the right. Don't want to get them confused. Sounds icky, but even if I did I wash my hair and face when I get into work. So all squeaky clean afterward.

+1 These are my favorite summer gloves. For fall I switch to the Grail, after that I have some off brand my LBS sells that are a little thicker.

I like one specific model of Izumi for cool weather because they are thin, yet technical, and have great tactile feedback.

I THINK they are they "Cyclone" but it's hard to tell because Izumi cleverly fails to include full product pictures on their web site.

Just got the Garneau Rafale from Nashbar for $23 . They look nice, fit nice and have ridden with them in high 30's and low 50's this week, did the job keeping my digits comfortable with good movement.

Measuring widest part of my palm circumference, i found they fit true to their size chart with just the right amount of stretch.

+2. Just picked up a pair last week and have been using them in the morning in the crisp fall weather and they are perfect for $10

Thanks all - lots of great ideas here.

I'm especially interested in something with little or no palm padding. I find large pads get in the way more than anything. I don't usually wear gloves when it's warm, and I have a good thick pair of lobsters for below freezing temps. Might try the Louis Garneau wind protects or some other cheap amazon special. Will report back with my experience!

Here's an update on my experience in case anyone is interested.

I bought 3 pairs of new gloves - one home depot $10 special, Pearl Izumi Thermal Lite, and Pearl Izumi Ride Pro Softshell Lite.

The HD gloves are ok. Not quite as flexible as I'd like, and I miss the silicone bits on cycling-specific gloves that help with grip.

Both pairs of PI gloves are great. The Thermal Lite is really pretty light. Best for temps above 55* so far. They also work well as a liner under the Ride Pros and an old pair of lobster gloves I have (also Pearl Izumi, but really only good below freezing for me). The Ride Pros are perfect for the in between weather above freezing and below about 55*. All in all, seems like I have found what I need!

Thanks again, all, for sharing your experiences.

I use my 50-60F long finger gloves that I insert into windbreaker split finger overgloves softshell. They also add a layer of rain protection when needed.

For $15 the PI Thermal Lite are hard to pass. At first I ordered a Large but returned them and sized down and am enjoying the grip. Feels fine in 50 degrees so far. Will try 40-50 later this week.

Yep - I agree! I also sized down after ordering a medium. Amazon's free returns on most clothing makes it extra attractive...

I got a pair for me and AG last time I was in Costco based on this recommendation. Of course, right after doing that a heat wave moved in, so I haven't actually used them. And there's nothing in the forecast to indicate I'll need to.

I went out this morning for a quick 15 miles in 45* and overcast conditions (not windy). Wore the Thermal Lites for the first half and then switched to the Pro Softshells. The Thermal Lites were passable and provide surprisingly good wind protection given how thin they are. I was a bit more comfortable in the Pro Softshells on the way home. Very happy with this selection!
