Shimano 8 hubs are no angels either, crapping out before 9,000 miles. 100 year old 3 spd SA hubs can work fine. The only one with drum brake for a 117 mm frame is the SA 3. I just put one on a 1973 CCM. I'll be dead before it stops working. My SA 5w worked great 10,500 miles, as long as it shifted. Maybe the new design 5 spd works better, but is 135 mm. Stay away from the IGH fixed gear goofiness. I haven't heard of any problems with the SA 8, of which there aren't many in use either. Whichever hub you get, switch the inside to an oil bath after a year or so.
