Not so clear cut on a Peugeot. The stamped serial number on my '79 UO-10M is Y912xxxxx, and the stamped number on my '81 PXN-10E is B102xxxx.

If the paper tag (with yet another serial number!) is intact you can see what the model number (and frame size) is, but graphics and component date codes will be a more accurate way to ascertain the year.
