You should use grease, but you need to loosen the nut at the top of the stem and then give it a tap. Repeat until the cone at the bottom is loose beneath the rest of the stem. Then it should go in easily. When you have the height you want tighten that bolt to pull the cone back up and expand the bottom of the stem.
