I'm a little surprised you can't get it to work. As no-one told me it wouldn't work I have built compact cranksets in the past that worked fine with an NR FD.

Two examples, that both served me well at L'Eroica. The first is a 50/36, the second a 49/36. I'd be surprised if the extra 2 teeth difference would make such a big difference.
