Compact Crank

I'm installing a 50x34 compact crank on my Raleigh and the Campagnolo NR front derailleur doesn't seem to be able to handle the shift from the small to large chain ring. Has anyone installed a 50x34 crank on a vintage bike? And if so, what FD did they find worked for them?

I'm running a 105 50x34 with a Tri-color FD. Has worked flawlessly.

SunTour ARX with my Sugino 48/34 crank, works great.

What chainrings are you using, OP?

I'm using an IRD compact. I believe they're made by Tange-Seiki.

all my road bikes have compact cranks and the 4 above FDs shift great on the bikes.
the cranks are all 110bcd arms from the '80s and only one bike has ramped chainrings. They shift unramped rings just fine.

Bikes: A green one, "Ragleigh," or something.

Anything designed for a triple chain ring, as long as your shifter has the range to pull it. The really wide MTB stuff with the stepped cages is probably overkill, though.

I'm a little surprised your NR FD won't hack it. Do you have a big range cogs out back? Is your chain maybe too long?

The one on my 50/34 is an RX100 from the mid 90's I think. (the pic shows 50/36 but I changed the inner ring to 34 at some point) The RX100 I have is mechanically identical to the TriColor 600/Ultegra one I have, same as thinktubes posted above. Haven't installed it yet, but I will. When I decide I can't live without those three little rectangles of color on my FD.

Bikes: Yes, please.

I'm a little surprised you can't get it to work. As no-one told me it wouldn't work I have built compact cranksets in the past that worked fine with an NR FD.

Two examples, that both served me well at L'Eroica. The first is a 50/36, the second a 49/36. I'd be surprised if the extra 2 teeth difference would make such a big difference.

My UO8 came from the factory with 52-36 and even the Simplex Prestige handled it nicely. Most of my bikes now are set up with 48-34 and they work just fine.

Check the angle of the cage when viewed from above. Also check that it isn't mounted too high on the ST.

Check the height and angle. A penny should just fit between the big chainring and the derailleur cage.

It should work if set up correctly.

As others have said, most any FD that works on a triple should work. I'd stay away from modern triple derailleurs- as they're kind of meant for indexed systems with specific sized chainrings.

WHEN, are you asking it to Up shift from the 34? Crest of the hill or while still hammering?

I'm still trying to set it up in my workshop.

Following Lascauxcaveman's adviceI checked the chain length. Although it looked OK by the big ring-big cog method, I removed one link and carefully adjusted the FD positioning and it works fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

How would too long a chain make small-to-large ring shifting harder?

I don't know, but it seems to work now.
