don't use the master link for purely aesthetic reasons; it didn't occur to me that there may be a mechanical reason for them beyond the "quicker, easier" aspect of their use. I've never experienced chain failure* (luck? bike+rider
<170lbs? something else?) but I'll be rethinking my approach now.
