I once saw a tweeker looking guy riding away on a bike he had just stolen. Woman and I locked our bikes next to each other outside a market. I used a thick cable and Kryptonite. She used a cheap chain and padlock. She went into the market. I went to get a newspaper first. As I was walking back to the market maybe 5 min. later I saw the guy riding her bike speedily up the street against traffic. Over his shoulder was a small duffel bag. He had undoubtedly been targeting the bike rack, waiting for an easy snatch. The cutting tool(s) was/were likely in the bag. Found the woman in the market and asked if she had leant her bike to anyone. She said she hadn't. I told her someone stole it. She said she hadn't felt like brining her good lock and then said "Oh well." WTH? It wasn't a beater bike. Trek aluminum road bike. Not the best thing I had ever seen, but certainly worth more effort than she put into things, if only to avoid having to walk home.
