Off topic, but I was impressed by some of these clocks/automatons people made in the 1700s.
In a way it's odd that they could build such intricate/complex gearing systems then, but wouldn't put the same on a bicycle until many decades later.

I can see why the Dutch didn't care, that place is mostly flat so fixed gear is perfect
