Off topic, but I was impressed by some of these clocks/automatons people made in the 1700s.
In a way it's odd that they could build such intricate/complex gearing systems then, but wouldn't put the same on a bicycle until many decades later.

very interesting video. At the time of the automata, they had barely got the hang of attaching pedals and cranks to bicycles. Even derailleurs are reasonably modern. Reliable ones that didn't break all the time didn't appear until the late 1920s/early 1930s.
