You could have a bike on each side of the river so you wouldn't have to worry about getting the bike across.
Some inventor should design a telescoping spring-loaded pole so that the Fierlieppen'er could trigger it instead of having to climb up while balancing the pole one one end. Maybe you could wind it up short enough to carry on the bike.
