Thanks for the replies. I am encouraged. Those who have done this - did you just hammer away at it cold, or heat it?
IIRC, that device was called the "Seat Post Thing", or SPT for short. I saw somewhere recently that someone had used a threadless stem with a shim around the seat post to accomplish the same thing.
