Done often enough. No problem. As long as the frame has the proper hanger tab (and on older bikes this isn't a valid assumption) the detachable hanger plate (always hated the term "claw") isn't needed and easily removed.

BTW the Campy NR der (the second photo) has a Japanese hanger plate on it already. Shimano IIRC. The Rally der still ahs an OEM campy hanger plate, which has some value to some collectors by it's self. Andy
