Reporting back with success. It was a bit more challenging for me than others made it sound, but whatever - it’s done. I used a bench vise, adjustable wrench and hammer. It was fairly gnarly by the time I had gotten the shape right, so I did some filing and sanding and rattle canned it. Then stitched some leather around the interface portion to protect bars and stem.
