What I want to know is can I put LX M580 cranks on my bike with no major effect to the rest of my drive train? Most of the info I read on cranks say that LX cranks are 9sp - can I use them with a 7 speed freewheel setup? I have already replaced the freewheel, and I have yet to buy a chain but I will do that as well.
My derailleurs are working fine so I don't want to change them - however my Fr Der is e-type. Can I upgrade cranks to LX M580 (I believe this is the crank with intergrated BB) How does the spindle length effect my chainline?
Would I have to change anything else on my bike?
If you get another crankset with the same size chainrings, it should work fine. You will almost certainly need to replace the bottom bracket as well...I don't know of any modern cranks that use such a long spindle.
