MTB Changing SR Cranks to Shimano LX M580

I have a 2001 Giant Rincon MTB with SR cranks that are in serious need of replacement. The rings are rivited so the whole crank needs to go due to 5 years of wear. Currently, these cranks are sq taper and the BB is 68x122.5mm.

What I want to know is can I put LX M580 cranks on my bike with no major effect to the rest of my drive train? Most of the info I read on cranks say that LX cranks are 9sp - can I use them with a 7 speed freewheel setup? I have already replaced the freewheel, and I have yet to buy a chain but I will do that as well.

My derailleurs are working fine so I don't want to change them - however my Fr Der is e-type. Can I upgrade cranks to LX M580 (I believe this is the crank with intergrated BB) How does the spindle length effect my chainline?

Would I have to change anything else on my bike?

Can anyone suggest alternate cranks (FSA, Truvativ etc) that may be better for me in the same price range of under $200US.

If you get another crankset with the same size chainrings, it should work fine. You will almost certainly need to replace the bottom bracket as well...I don't know of any modern cranks that use such a long spindle.

Thank you for the assurance. I may not buy that specific model LX but I will be sure to increase my value and performance with whatever brand I buy. My current ring set is 24/34/42 - can I deviate from that at all when I get new?

What type of BB spline is considered most current/efficient? ISIS, Splined, Octalink, so many terms - I get confused.

Truvativ seees popular for DH and FSA for racing. Any clarity to offer - or is it a design preference in most cases?
