Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

There is nothing systematically wrong with KMC chains. I've had good service from them and they also make some of Shimano's chains. Apparently you got a, presumably rare, defective one.
