Do you have a dial- or digital-caliper? Anything 7.3mm or narrower would work on 7- or 8-s freewheels/cassettes.

An older DID, Shimano, Suntour, Sachs, Regina or Izumi "7s" chain would likely pre-date the common existence of 8s cassttes, so the "7s" designation might at this point be more about semantics than about any lack of 8s compatibility.

Any lack of Hyperglide compatibility would also be highly related to the vintage of the chain (HG first appeared in 1989 iir).
