I bought a 7 speed chain
I'd never heard of a 7 speed chain. I've always used 8 speed. The difference seems to be that the 7 speed only works with Uniglide and the 8 speed swings both ways. It was half the price of the 8 speeds, and all but one of my bikes are uniglide, atm. I will shortly install it and see how it works.

Thanks for posting... Another tibit for that "Useless Ship File" in the back of my brain... That I keep digging into, more often than other people would like... Ha

An older DID, Shimano, Suntour, Sachs, Regina or Izumi "7s" chain would likely pre-date the common existence of 8s cassttes, so the "7s" designation might at this point be more about semantics than about any lack of 8s compatibility.
Any lack of Hyperglide compatibility would also be highly related to the vintage of the chain (HG first appeared in 1989 iir).

I encountered my first 7-speed chain recently as well, a KMC something-or-other which was a trade to me for something I shipped out. (I have generally been using nothing but SRAM PC-8x0 chains for several years.) I put it on my Univega (Regina America 1992 group 2/7sp SIS). Works like a charm.

It's a KMC complete with quicklink. I haven't measured it but it is visibly wider than the 8 speed that came off. And it has silenced the drivetrain.
I bought it in the local shop. I live in a small town in Yucatán, where 28" double top tube bikes are more common than 700C bikes. In fact it's easier to buy spokes for 28" than for 29". This chain was billed aa being for a 27" bike. And it cost US$6.50. I'm going to see if they have any more. The SRAM was $25.
