As far as the "2nd-string" Italian cranks, I've been very pleased with Galli and Gipiemme, a little less with Ofmega (also sold as Avocet in the US) and I think the Sugino "Mighty" clone is just fine.
Agree 100%. My old Stronglight crank chewed through rings - and their weird bolt spacing made replacement a chore. But it sure was light! I haven't heard the name Gipiemme in a long time! I had an old Falcon of England with a Gipiemme BB, and it was so smooth - you couldn't tell that it wasn't Campy.
