I cannot speak for anyone else, but from my point of view (having occasionally been on the receiving end, which I do not enjoy), I think his presence in the mechanics sub-forum is (and could continue to be) much more of an asset than it is a liability.
Why not take a completely different approach to the problem?
Invite him to moderate the Bicycle Mechanics sub-forum, allow him to move appropriate posts into the forum, and to set the (pre-determined) tone of the discussion. The advice and experience he has to offer can and should be a major asset to BikeForums.
That's not a bad idea. When I was in the working world, I was nicest to my colleagues when I was in charge of them.
