Maybe it's that the comfort configurations have the handlebars closer to the seat (horizontally), for a more upright posture? Not really sure, but you're right... you stand up and you just seem taller and too close to the handlebars. It doesn't really help you be able to put on a lot of acceleration.

Heh I dunno, from what I can tell Jamis occupies a fairly unique niche, in between affordable and expensive and pretty decent quality for your money. I'm not sure you'd have been shown a lot of comparable options.
