If they had done it, perhaps a 50th Anniversary "group" could have been produced with a number of options, so that older bikes as well as newer ones could be used. Offer a seatpost, stem and hubs for older bikes; modern cranks and electronic shifters for newer bikes, but make all the parts share a common design aesthetic, common logos, etc.
