Lower-end, maybe, but mind you, these '80s Shimano components (and Suntour of this era too) work quite well. My All Terra had Exage thumbshifts and derailers, and it worked beautifully.
Only drawback that I see here to yours is that the rings aren't bolted on, but built into the crankset - I've never been fond of these type cranksets.

That's true, I was mainly noticing the cranks. Plus he'd have to replace the rear derailleur anyway.

At first I figured it had Rapidfire shifters (*push* *push*), but now that I look at the picture more closely, I can only see one lever on the backside of the handlebars. Yet I don't recall Shimano's lower end having Rapidfire Plus until 1993. Maybe someone else can see better than me.
