I can’t speak for aluminum frames but there is nothing inherently wrong with a quill seatpost in a vintage steel frame as long as you keep them maintained and lubricated, same as any quill stem. My 1990 Moser Leader ex-race bike was designed for one and does what it needs to without any issues at all.
