We must know more about this project. Does it involve an Ideale 90 saddle with the flat alloy rails?

Quill seat posts were a bad idea in the first place,,,
when combined with an ALUMINUM Frame, the bad idea becomes even More Destructive.
31.8mm seat posts are for Aluminum frames, and top clamping.

Need some clarification here. Is it the seatpost that cracked at the clamp portion near the top, or did the frame crack at the seat cluster? Pix would help, so hurry and get to ten posts so you can put pix on your own posts or add to your gallery and let someone know so they can post here for you.

I can’t speak for aluminum frames but there is nothing inherently wrong with a quill seatpost in a vintage steel frame as long as you keep them maintained and lubricated, same as any quill stem. My 1990 Moser Leader ex-race bike was designed for one and does what it needs to without any issues at all.

The Colnago I did awhile back had a wonky ST that took a bunch of hand work to get the panto SP to work well and on top of that it had a Sugino binder with a key that had been carving into the clamp ear. Both things being cardinal sins IMO on a Colnago especially.
