one leg drills

So I have been doing one leg drills on my trainer to try to correct my pedal stroke. Ive been striving for an even "whir" of the trainer but Im havin trouble gettin it down. Is it possible to have it completely even? Also, what cadence should I start out at? I always try to start around 85-90 but end up flying to 105-115 in order to ty to keep the whir even. Ive been doing 1min sets switching legs for about 10-20 min. Should I place myself in an easy gear or no?
Thanks,
Nick
