Multiple Matrix rim models were used thru the years on 1400 bikes.
Assuming your rims are 13mm internal and 20mm external, or something like that, yes they could handle a 35mm tire. No it isnt as ideal as a typical rim width from 10 years ago or modern rim width, but yes that rim can handle a 35mm tire.

You will not die. Properly inflated 35mm tires will perform just fine on a 19/20mm external aluminum rim.
