35mm tire to replace a 23mm?
Wondering if I can use the Matrix wheels from a Trek1400 on my Trek 7300 with 35mm tires? Trying to save some time and heartbreak by asking.

Multiple Matrix rim models were used thru the years on 1400 bikes.
Assuming your rims are 13mm internal and 20mm external, or something like that, yes they could handle a 35mm tire. No it isnt as ideal as a typical rim width from 10 years ago or modern rim width, but yes that rim can handle a 35mm tire.
You will not die. Properly inflated 35mm tires will perform just fine on a 19/20mm external aluminum rim.

can you? yes
will it be a quick swap without some readjustments? probably not.
your brakes will need to be reset.
the shifting may be very close, or spot-on., IF the gear count remains the same.
the brake pads might rub on those much more bulbous tires.
your chain might need a couple less links, or may be fine.

A 7300 frame will likely be spaced at 135mm, while a wheel from a 1400 would likely be 126mm or 130mm. Making the wheel fit the bike would involve respacing and redishing the wheel if yours is 130mm, and you would likely need a new axle as well if it is 126mm.
35mm tires will fit fine on the rims.

IF, as I am now beginning to surmise is the case, IF a 1400 wheelset is legacy tech from the downtube shifter days and a 7300 is more current issue .... WHY is this even being considered? Is it to have an alternate size for gravel or something? Doesn't look like it. Given that going from one to the other will not be a simple swap out/swap in ... what would be the attraction of using a decades old wheelset in a more recent bike?

I had a Trek 7300 from 2003, had 8K miles on it running Mavic A719 rims with Shimano Deore hubs with a 19mm rim interior and ran 35mm tires on it. Did not have to adjust anything but the pads a bit. You can find decent wheels that will work for you need to fit the 135mm rear and 100mm front no problem for not a lot of cash. Just a general box rim and 32 or 36 spoke that will make it nice and strong and give you a long wheel life. Might stop by a bike shop to see what they could build up for you, they should be able to build you one up fairly reasonable. They can then make sure the the hub will work with your bike. I am assuming it is still the stock setup, 3 rings up front, 8 speed shifters. I believe mine was 8 speed.
Don't give, just do some research.
Assumptions: 8 speed, Quick Release, Rim Brake

Yeah. Thanks. I was going the other way ... the better rims and hubs to the 7300. I was hoping for an easy swap. No issues on the brakes but the possible wrong # of speeds, chain links cared me off. Both bikes back together now. 1400 on a trainer.
