"8" for eight-speed, I suppose. Always liked Shimano's DA for 8sp. Talk about gold - those cost the gold equivalent nowadays!
KMC makes awesome chains. My bikes all shod with 11sp widths. Seem to last about 5k miles or so and no rotation for me.
