it does offer more surface area but without a locking crank, it appears to me that it is a poor design.
You can try the same basic method with any of your bikes today. Use the pedal to balance the bike at a curb. With a little finesse it will work fine.
As I said, I and others have been using that method for decades. The only differences from the ACC are that it doesn't require a curb and is more stable.
